About the position

The Software Engineering Manager for Applied ML Localization at Apple is responsible for leading a diverse team of Applied ML engineers to enhance localization processes and tooling across Apple's products. This role focuses on leveraging machine learning, particularly large language models and natural language processing, to improve the quality of localization for international customers. The manager will oversee the development and implementation of ML features, ensuring collaboration across various teams to meet product and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of Applied ML engineers to design and implement ML localization features and tooling.
  • Lead the exploration and application of Large Language Models (LLMs) for translation tasks and product features.
  • Translate research into practical systems and models to enhance machine translation and product features.
  • Engage in all aspects of model development, including ideation, training, experimentation, and deployment.
  • Collaborate with translation, localization quality, project management, and engineering teams to develop machine learning solutions.
  • Work cross-functionally to analyze requirements, prioritize goals, and achieve them in an Agile-like environment.
  • Track progress of the team's tasks and find ways to improve ML engineering workflow and support.
  • Present and scope solutions for various software teams.
  • Support and help team members grow and build their careers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Proven track record of growing and developing team members.
  • Extensive cross-functional project leadership and delivery experience.
  • Experience with Machine Learning (ML), particularly with Large Language Models (LLMs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply cutting-edge research into consumer-oriented products.
  • Experience adapting pre-trained LLMs for downstream tasks.
  • Self-motivated and proactive with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • BS/MS in Computer Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
