About the position

As a Software Engineering Manager II at Google, you will play a pivotal role in leading a team of engineers in the development and optimization of embedded systems and firmware within the Platforms Infrastructure Engineering division. Your responsibilities will extend beyond mere technical oversight; you will be expected to provide strategic direction and leadership for major projects that align with Google's ambitious goals. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and managerial skills, as you will be responsible for guiding engineers across multiple teams and locations, ensuring that project goals are met while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. In this role, you will manage project goals, contribute to product strategy, and help develop your team. You will be involved in various areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, and large-scale system design. Your leadership will be crucial in optimizing not only your own code but also in enabling your team to enhance their coding practices. You will oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple international sites, managing a significant product budget and ensuring that the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team remains robust and efficient. Your work will directly impact the performance and reliability of Google's services, as you will be responsible for maintaining the infrastructure that supports the user experience. You will also be tasked with setting and communicating team priorities that align with the broader organizational goals, developing a mid-term technical vision, and evolving the roadmap to meet future requirements. Regular meetings with team members to discuss performance, provide feedback, and coach them in their development will be a key aspect of your managerial duties.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals.
  • Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals.
  • Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
  • Develop the mid-term technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your (often multiple) team(s).
  • Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Design, guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing strategic projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
  • 3 years of experience with embedded operating systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
