About the position

As a Software Engineering Manager II at YouTube, you will play a pivotal role in leading a team of engineers while also providing technical leadership on major projects. Your responsibilities will extend beyond just managing code; you will be instrumental in optimizing the performance of your team and ensuring that project goals align with the broader objectives of the organization. You will oversee a diverse range of projects that span various domains including information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, and large-scale system design. This role requires a blend of technical expertise and managerial skills, as you will be responsible for guiding engineers across multiple teams and locations, managing a significant product budget, and overseeing the deployment of large-scale projects internationally. In this position, you will set and communicate team priorities that support the organization's goals, align strategies and processes across teams, and establish clear expectations for individual team members. Regular meetings with team members will be essential for discussing performance, providing feedback, and coaching for development. You will also be tasked with developing a mid-term technical vision and roadmap for your teams, evolving this roadmap to meet future requirements and infrastructure needs. Your role will involve designing, guiding, and vetting system designs, as well as writing product or system development code to address complex problems. Additionally, you will review code developed by other engineers, ensuring adherence to best practices in terms of style, accuracy, testability, and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals.
  • Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals.
  • Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
  • Develop the mid-term technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your (often multiple) team(s).
  • Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Design, guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing strategic projects.
  • 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
