About the position
Canonical is seeking multiple candidates to lead its Linux kernel engineering efforts, focusing on upstream development, optimizing the Ubuntu kernel for various environments, and ensuring compatibility with hardware. The role is suitable for experienced managers or proficient technical leads passionate about Linux and its distribution. As an engineering manager, the primary responsibility is to support and develop the team while ensuring timely delivery and high-quality standards in kernel engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone
- Develop your team through coaching, mentoring, and feedback
- Support timely delivery of core and specialized Ubuntu kernels
- Oversee commercial engagements requiring custom kernel engineering
- Ensure ongoing commitment to strict quality and reliability standards
- Engage with other teams at Canonical, the open source community, and commercial partners
- Work from home with occasional global travel for internal and external engineering events
Requirements
- Significant programming experience in C
- Experience with Python, Golang, or similar languages
- Substantial experience with Linux kernel internals and concepts
- Solid understanding of Linux kernel development principles
- Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
- Contributed to an open source project in the past
- Understanding of agile software development methodologies
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with cloud environments
- Familiarity with hypervisors
- Knowledge of security updates and CVEs
