About the position

Carrier is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of intermediate to experienced professionals in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. This role is pivotal in managing the development of embedded software and firmware solutions, ensuring that projects align with the company's strategic goals. The Software Engineering Manager will liaise with various stakeholders, including OEM Solutions engineering leadership, sales, and product marketing teams, to develop and execute a comprehensive product roadmap. This position not only involves technical leadership but also requires the ability to represent the organization at external events, allocate project work effectively, evaluate team performance, and create career development programs for team members. In this role, you will provide technical direction and leadership to a diverse team of engineers, ensuring that design and compliance with relevant standards and agency approvals, such as UL and CSA, are met. You will champion the development of best practices and standard work processes aimed at continuous improvement in software and firmware design engineering. The manager will oversee the execution of robust design practices and tools, which include requirements management, architecture, design, analysis, and testing. This encompasses conducting product safety assessments, managing FMEA deliverables, and overseeing engineering change management processes. The position requires up to 10% travel, which may include both domestic and international trips. As a leader, you will be responsible for hiring, developing, and retaining multi-discipline technical talent, including direct hires, contract workers, and outside resources. Your ability to manage multiple priorities, provide trade-offs in design, and collaborate successfully across the organization will be crucial to the success of the team and the projects undertaken.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and direction for a staff of multi-discipline embedded software/firmware development engineers.
  • Work with OEM Solutions engineering leadership, sales, and product marketing teams to develop and execute the product roadmap.
  • Hire, develop and retain multi-discipline technical talent including direct, contract and outside resources.
  • Ensure design and compliance to relevant standards and agency approvals (UL, CSA, cybersecurity, etc.).
  • Champion development of best practices and standard work for continuous improvement in software/firmware design engineering.
  • Oversee execution of robust design practices and tools including requirements management, architecture, design, analysis, and test.
  • Conduct product safety assessments, manage FMEA deliverables, and oversee engineering change management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • 5+ years of experience in product development with embedded software/firmware design and systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS degree with 2+ years of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Ability to recruit, lead and mentor technical talent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and provide trade-offs in design.
  • Ability to successfully collaborate across the organization.
  • Experience authoring and overseeing design documentation such as software/firmware architecture and design specifications.
  • Knowledge of HVAC/Refrigeration controls and electromechanical solutions.
  • Familiarity with operating system design methodologies and implementation (RTOS, Linux).
  • Experience in mobile application development (iOS, Android).
  • Knowledge of telemetry/GPS/CDMA/GPRS/UMTS.
  • Experience with third-party certification testing (e.g., UL) or new product development in a regulated industry.
  • Project management experience.
