About the position

The Software Research and Development Engineer will join the Intelligent Sensor Technology Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. This role focuses on researching and developing innovative solutions to complex scientific and engineering challenges, particularly in support of the Navy, Department of Defense (DoD), and Intelligence Community (IC). The engineer will be responsible for developing both front-end and back-end software for decision-making processes related to sensor data fusion and automated data management, collaborating with scientists and engineers to create prototype capabilities for demonstration and transition to DoD use.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems.
  • Investigate and evaluate the practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve various engineering systems.
  • Conduct experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions based on research findings.
  • Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, papers, or presentations.
  • Interact collaboratively with team members, engineers, and scientists to accomplish organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python programming languages.
  • Strong understanding of concepts from Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Experience collaborating in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly in written form.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing simulations.
  • Experience in mathematical modeling.
  • Experience working with embedded systems.
  • Experience programming sensor systems.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher.
