About the position

The Polysomnographic Technologist at Houston Methodist is responsible for performing polysomnographic procedures to evaluate and treat sleep disorders. This role involves direct patient care, assisting physicians, and ensuring adherence to established standards for optimal patient safety and service. The technologist works independently while collaborating with the healthcare team to deliver exceptional patient care and improve departmental outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform polysomnographic procedures under supervision to evaluate and treat sleep disorders.
  • Assist physicians and healthcare professionals with sleep disorder-related procedures.
  • Educate patients about sleep study procedures and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed.
  • Prepare patients for procedures by addressing their physical needs and applying monitoring equipment.
  • Monitor study-tracing quality and document significant clinical events during sleep studies.
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment, ensuring proper functionality and cleanliness.
  • Implement interventions during studies to ensure patient safety and quality outcomes.
  • Document all patient care activities accurately and enter charges at the time of service.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for required credentials.
  • One year of experience in a Sleep Disorders laboratory/center preferred.
  • Registered Polysomnographer Technologist (RPSGT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorder Specialty (RRT-SDS) certification required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Proficiency in English for effective communication with patients and healthcare team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT).
  • Familiarity with sleep study information systems and office software.
