About the position

The Sojourner Advocate position is a full-time role focused on supporting victims of domestic abuse and harassment within the Milwaukee County Restraining Order Office. The advocate will assist clients in navigating the civil and criminal court systems, developing safety plans, and accessing community resources. This bilingual position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including court officials and law enforcement, to ensure comprehensive support for clients from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Sojourner Family Peace Center staff to assist clients and ensure all safety planning, community resource, and legal assistance needs are met.
  • Make client referrals to agency and community resources as needed.
  • Provide legal advocacy to victims seeking temporary restraining orders and injunctions.
  • Accompany clients to legal proceedings as requested or necessary.
  • Document all contacts and maintain client files, including outcome information.
  • Complete intakes with clients to identify individual needs and assist with developing a personal action plan.
  • Utilize independent critical skills to identify additional challenges such as AODA and mental health issues.
  • Work with external partners to maximize the effectiveness of restraining orders and injunctions for clients.
  • Assist non-English speaking clients through the restraining order filing process.
  • Collect, maintain, and report client data, both computerized and hard copy files.
  • Assist with training volunteers and interns.
  • Attend internal staff meetings and community outreach as applicable.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social work, human services, or a relevant field.
  • Preferred one to two years of professional experience in advocacy, case management, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of de-escalation techniques and ability to utilize them when necessary.
  • Experience with family violence issues preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of Danger Assessment, LAP, and other relevant screening tools.
