About the position

The Solid Waste Management Department of the City of Durham is dedicated to providing exceptional customer service and effective management of waste collection, recycling, and disposal services. This role is crucial in enhancing the city's appearance while ensuring sustainability. As a Solid Waste Attendant, you will be responsible for collecting, transporting, and disposing of municipal solid and yard waste through semi-skilled and skilled labor. The position requires adherence to established procedures and instructions, with minimal prior training or experience needed. You will work under general supervision, performing standardized tasks that involve limited decision-making, primarily focused on the safe use of work tools. In this role, you will assist in the daily operations of the Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, guiding the public in the proper use of the facilities. Your responsibilities will include cleaning facilities and equipment, performing basic maintenance, and providing customer service. You will also keep records and report maintenance needs to higher authorities when they fall outside your assigned scope of work. This position is critical to emergency operations, requiring you to report to work during emergencies or disaster events.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily operations of the Waste Disposal and Recycling Center.
  • Direct and inform the public on the proper use of various areas at the Waste Disposal and Recycling Center.
  • Perform cleaning of facilities and equipment.
  • Conduct basic maintenance of equipment, grounds, and facilities.
  • Provide customer service and keep records of maintenance needs.
  • Report maintenance needs to higher authority that fall outside of the assigned work.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC).
  • One year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment.
  • A valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Willing and able to work in various types of weather conditions (high temperatures, snow, rain, sleet, etc.).
  • Willing and able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
