About the position

Danfoss in Ames, Iowa is searching for a Solutions Engineering Intern to start in Summer 2025. This internship offers a unique opportunity for students to gain real-world engineering experience in a fast-paced global company and a high-performing team environment. The intern will support ongoing new system development programs applicable to agricultural and construction vehicles, engaging in various aspects of system design, analysis, implementation, testing, and troubleshooting. This role is ideal for students who seek variety, challenge, and the chance to build problem-solving and interpersonal skills through hands-on experience. The intern will be involved in general support of ongoing research programs, which will include both hands-on and theoretical engineering work. Responsibilities will encompass designing, assembling, testing, and troubleshooting prototype multi-domain systems, which may include hydraulic, mechanical, and control systems. The intern will also be responsible for documenting results and drawing conclusions to support lead engineers, as well as performing both desk-type analysis and hands-on engineering work. This position is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that will prepare students for future careers in engineering.

Responsibilities

  • General support of ongoing research programs with both hands-on and theoretical engineering work
  • Design, assemble, test and troubleshoot prototype multi-domain systems (hydraulic, mechanical, controls)
  • Document results and draw conclusions to support lead engineers
  • Perform both 'desk type' analysis and 'hands on' engineering work

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Agricultural Engineering
  • Availability to work full-time in the Summer and potentially continue on during the semester full-time or part-time
  • Demonstrated hands-on mechanical, electrical and/or software aptitude
  • Prior experience with the operation of farming, construction equipment, or automobiles is a plus
  • Experience with hydraulic systems and components
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams including mechanical, software, electronics, and vehicle systems
  • Project management experience
  • Familiarity with DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) tools
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Candidates must be located within 50 miles of the work location
