About the position

The Sommelier at The Mark Hotel will play a crucial role in supporting the Beverage Program, ensuring high standards of quality and service while maximizing profits. This position involves direct interaction with guests, focusing on beverage sales and enhancing the overall dining experience. The Sommelier will work closely with the Chef Sommelier and the Director of Food & Beverage, contributing to a high-volume restaurant environment in one of New York's most affluent neighborhoods.

Responsibilities

  • Work the floor during service with an emphasis on beverage sales.
  • Up-sell at all possible opportunities.
  • Maintain a high quality level of service regarding body language, eye contact, and proper verbiage to enhance the guest experience.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all wine, saké, beer, spirits, specialty cocktails, teas, sodas, and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of all decanters, wine stations, and storage areas pertaining to beverages.
  • Open and close as needed.
  • Provide excellent service at all times to all guests.
  • Respond to all guest questions and provide assistance, direction, and information as requested.
  • Assist in all other aspects of service as needed to support team members.
  • Attend all food and beverage training classes.
  • Follow the posted opening and closing duties and side work sheet.
  • Attend daily pre-meal/communication meetings.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar position or proper certification.
  • In-depth knowledge of food and beverage, including liquors and cocktails.
  • Reading, writing, and oral proficiency in the English language.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and holidays.
  • Self-motivator and motivator of others.
  • Ability to relate to all levels of guests and management.
  • Maintain a clean and healthy personal hygiene and grooming.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of wine pairings and service techniques.
  • Experience in high-volume restaurant settings.
