About the position

The position involves performing advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures such as M-mode, 2-D, Doppler, and Color Flow Doppler using various equipment and techniques. The incumbent is responsible for making necessary measurements for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results, including muscle wall thickness, diameter of chambers, volume of chambers, valve areas, and blood flow velocity and direction. The role may also involve assisting physicians in the Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs by performing echocardiograph studies to aid in complex procedures, thereby decreasing risk factors. The individual will identify and define cardiac abnormalities, prepare patients for procedures, obtain clinical histories, assist in transesophageal studies, communicate clinical findings, and maintain the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment. The position requires collaboration with the medical director to develop quality processes and protocols, ensuring adherence to standards and ICAEL accreditation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures such as M-mode, 2-D, Doppler, and Color Flow Doppler.
  • Identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities and extends the scope of the examination appropriately.
  • Prepares patients for procedures and obtains clinical history.
  • Assists in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologist.
  • Communicates clinical findings to appropriate staff.
  • Records statistics and performs daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment.
  • Acts as a resource to other staff, physicians, and students regarding equipment and techniques.
  • Implements protocols as new technology evolves.
  • Works closely with medical director to develop and ensure quality processes and protocols.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.

Requirements

  • Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-AE) registration with Adult Echo issued by the ARDMS, or
  • Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) registration issued by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) to be obtained within 6 months.
  • Advanced training beyond High School in an accredited or approved program in Sonography.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in cardiovascular sonography.
