About the position

The Staff Sonographer at Prisma Health is responsible for providing diagnostic patient care services through the use of diagnostic medical sonography. This role requires independent judgment during sonographic exams, effective communication with patients and physicians, and adherence to quality control standards. The sonographer will also mentor new staff and students, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies patients using two demographic identifiers and reviews physician orders for procedures.
  • Performs all ultrasound procedures using independent judgment to differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
  • Analyzes sonograms and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Maintains imaging quality according to quality control standards and protocol requirements.
  • Explains procedures to patients and ensures their comfort during the process.
  • Prepares the examination room and obtains necessary supplies for procedures.
  • Maintains a sanitary and organized environment, disposing of used supplies according to hospital policy.
  • Controls patient flow for efficient use of equipment and complies with departmental downtime protocols.
  • Charges procedures and supplies upon completion of exams and assists in resolving outstanding charges.
  • Communicates effectively with team members and ensures proper handoff of patient information between shifts.
  • Operates the PACS system and verifies studies before sending them for review.
  • Familiarizes self with HIPAA mandates and follows Prisma Health guidelines for communication.
  • Mentors newly hired sonographers and instructs sonography students in departmental procedures.
  • Performs quality checks on sonograms and assists with troubleshooting complex studies.

Requirements

  • Completion of a radiology or sonography program, preferably accredited.
  • Credentialed Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in using office equipment such as fax and copier.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Mathematical skills and data entry experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Sonography clinical experience preferred.
  • ARRT in Radiology certification preferred.
  • PACS experience preferred.
