About the position

The SPEd Self Contained Teacher for grades PK-5 is responsible for collaborating with students, parents, and staff to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process for each assigned student. This role requires the implementation of instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs tailored to the needs of the students, with written evidence of preparation as mandated. The teacher will plan and utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the diverse learning styles and needs of the students assigned to them. In addition to direct instruction, the teacher will work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as necessary and assist special education students in regular classes with their assignments. Participation in ARD Committee meetings is essential, as is the responsibility of interpreting educational programs to the community through activities such as open houses and PTA meetings. The teacher will consult with classroom teachers regarding the management of student behavior according to the IEP and present subject matter in accordance with the guidelines established by the IEP. Ongoing assessments of student achievement will be conducted through both formal and informal testing, and the teacher will compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents. Creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students is a key responsibility. The teacher will also manage student behavior and administer discipline, including intervening in crises and physically restraining students as necessary, in accordance with the IEP. Compliance with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers is mandatory, and regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Knowledge of computer software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, practices, principles, and procedures pertaining to auditing and accounting.
  • Ability to write clear and conclusive audit work papers and concise narrative audit reports.
  • Tact and diplomacy in working with various district and non-district personnel.
  • Organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the position.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university; valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements for subject and subject level assigned.
