About the position
The 911 Public Safety Communications Dispatcher plays a critical role in the Department of Emergency Management by receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls. This position requires effective communication and coordination with police, fire, and emergency medical services to ensure timely responses to incidents. Dispatchers work in a fast-paced environment, operating 24/7, and must be prepared to handle various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Receive incoming emergency (9-1-1) and non-emergency calls from the public and public safety agencies.
- Gather, evaluate, prioritize, and document information from callers efficiently.
- Dispatch police, fire, and EMS field units to specific locations using a computer-aided dispatch system.
- Evaluate incoming reports of emergencies and transmit complete information to field personnel.
- Monitor and maintain the status of incidents and records of dispatched emergency service personnel.
- Receive and disseminate information from law enforcement and emergency service networks.
- Maintain familiarity with area geography and recognize hazards to public safety.
- Respond to inquiries regarding police, fire, or emergency medical services and provide appropriate referrals.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
- Two years of experience in a public contact position providing information or services.
Nice-to-haves
- Completion of 30 semester units or 45 quarter units of coursework from an accredited college or university.
