About the position

The Highway Designer position within the Alternative Project Delivery/Design-Build series at MoDOT is responsible for determining highway design features and preparing detailed construction plans for highway projects. This role is available at entry-level, intermediate, or senior levels, depending on the candidate's skills and experience. The position offers a career ladder for advancement without the need for competitive selection, allowing for professional growth as employees gain experience and skills. The designer will work under moderate supervision and will be involved in innovative contracting methods such as Design-Build and Fixed Price/Variable Scope.

Responsibilities

  • Review plans and traffic and safety analyses, including bridge replacements and resurfacing using engineering software.
  • Prepare reconnaissance and conceptual reports and other project correspondence.
  • Review highway design features against standards including geometrics, profile grades, and construction staging.
  • Assist in the development and review of detailed preliminary plans, right of way plans, and final plans for complex projects.
  • Compute quantities from standards and estimate costs for projects in all stages.
  • Obtain and plot land and property lines on plans for survey notes and abstracts in conjunction with a Professional Land Surveyor.
  • Address public concerns through various communication methods including written correspondence and public hearings.
  • Compile information for the development of Request for Proposal documents for Design-Build projects.
  • Attend meetings with shortlisted design-build contractors and review contractor plans for errors and conformance with standards.
  • Evaluate and creatively mitigate project risks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university curriculum.
  • For Intermediate Highway Designer: Two years of experience in highway or transportation engineering.
  • For Senior Highway Designer: Four years of experience in highway or transportation engineering.
