About the position

The Washington office of Jones Day is seeking an associate to join its Global Disputes Practice. This role involves providing legal representation and strategic advice to clients in various dispute resolution contexts, including litigation and arbitration, particularly in matters involving investor-state disputes and public international law.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal representation for clients.
• Advise clients on legal matters.
• Represent clients in litigation and other forms of dispute resolution.
• Research law and analyze complex legal issues, including ICSID arbitration matters.
• Write and review court and other dispute resolution filings.
• Draft legal memoranda, briefs, contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
• Examine and interpret legal data to determine advisability and provide legal advice.
• Review and analyze legal and business documents in Russian.
• Supervise work of junior lawyers and paralegals.
• Litigate investor state arbitration matters, including issues related to CIS countries and CIS civil law.
• Interpret treaties and other instruments under public international law.

Requirements

• Must have a U.S. Juris Doctor and be licensed to practice law in Washington, D.C.
• Must have 12 months of experience as a Law Clerk, Summer Associate, or related.
• Experience with litigating investor state arbitration matters against CIS countries.
• Experience with litigating UNCITRAL arbitration matters or ICSID arbitration matters.
• Experience with litigating issues of CIS civil law.
• Experience reviewing and analyzing legal and business documents in Russian.
• Experience with treaty interpretation under public international law.
• Must be willing and able to occasionally travel domestically and internationally for hearings and other work-related matters.
• Must be proficient in Russian.
