About the position

The CMM Programmer position at a leading custom injection molding company in Elgin, Illinois, focuses on ensuring product quality and driving continuous improvement through effective CMM programming and 3D metrology. The role involves overseeing quality during product launches, collaborating with engineering teams, and conducting dimensional layouts to maintain high standards throughout the production process.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and ensure quality during new and transfer product launches.
  • Assist Project Engineers in facilitating smooth transitions from pre-launch to production.
  • Conduct full dimensional layouts for new and transfer parts using appropriate measurement techniques and 3D metrology equipment, ensuring repeatable results.
  • Collaborate with Process Engineering on the production floor to optimize critical dimensions and reduce defects and scrap.
  • Lead discussions with customers on print, material, and testing specifications, as well as measurement techniques and submission timelines.
  • Prepare and submit accurate Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) packages.
  • Develop fixtures, measurement methods, and procedures for product verification, and create work instructions to support visual and measurement activities.
  • Provide training as needed.
  • Contribute to concurrent engineering projects by representing Quality Assurance and customer needs.
  • Participate in internal and external quality audits.
  • Work with suppliers and customers to resolve quality issues and implement corrective actions, as directed by the Director of Quality.
  • Serve as an internal auditor as assigned by the Director of Quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Quality.

Requirements

  • High School education or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in a Quality Assurance role
  • Proven experience with CMM programming is required
  • 2+ years in a plastic injection molding environment
  • At least 1 year of experience with layout inspections and programming inspection equipment
  • Strong knowledge of inspection methods, statistical process control (SPC), and quality documentation
  • Proficiency in inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and vision machines
  • Familiarity with IATF 16949 procedures and AIAG standards (FMEA, Control Plan, MSA, SPC)
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
  • Competence in identifying subtle variations in color (color testing required)
  • Basic Windows PC proficiency
