About the position

The Corrections Deputy is responsible for maintaining security within a designated section of the correctional facility under the supervision of a shift commander. This role involves processing prisoners, conducting regular checks, observing inmate behavior, and ensuring the safety and security of both inmates and staff. The deputy also participates in inmate transportation, provides medical care, and performs various administrative duties related to inmate management.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process prisoners through the computerized booking system, including fingerprinting and photographing.
  • Conduct regular floor counts and cell checks to ensure all inmates are accounted for and secured.
  • Observe inmate behavior and take appropriate actions in case of incidents such as fights or property damage.
  • Distribute meals to inmates and collect dishes and utensils afterward.
  • Maintain a log of shift activity and prepare incident reports.
  • Oversee inmate workers and participate in periodic searches of inmates and cells.
  • Provide medications and emergency medical care, including CPR and First Aid.
  • Transport inmates to court, hospitals, and other facilities as required.
  • Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels under adverse conditions.
  • Perform searches of persons to detect potential weapons and contraband.
  • Subdue resisting subjects using defensive tactics and approved non-lethal weapons.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; college courses in Corrections preferred.
  • Completion of the Michigan Sheriff Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) 160 hr Local Corrections Officer Academy when requested.
  • Experience in the Corrections field at the County level is preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • No prior felony convictions; must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to receive and maintain a valid CPL (Concealed Pistol License).
  • Must pass the Michigan Sheriff's Association's EMPCO Written Exam and submit documentation within 15 days of the position's closing date.
  • Must pass a physical agility examination within 15 days of the position's closing date.
  • Successful completion of an oral interview process.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a comprehensive background investigation.

Nice-to-haves
