About the position

The Court Security Officer (CSO) position is a specialized role focused on providing protective services at U.S. Federal Court Houses and other designated areas under contract with the U.S. Marshals Service. CSOs operate under limited supervision, performing various security duties including patrols, surveillance, and enforcement of facility rules. The role requires maintaining situational awareness and responding to potential threats while working in diverse and sometimes challenging conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce the District's entry and identification system.
  • Test and report emergency equipment.
  • Patrol court facilities and grounds according to post orders.
  • Man USMS authorized stationary posts.
  • Provide focused surveillance on incoming traffic to detect threats.
  • Provide armed escort services for judges and court personnel.
  • Provide security for off-site judicial functions.
  • Direct traffic and monitor vehicles and pedestrians as needed.
  • Provide courtroom security during hearings when assigned.
  • Enforce federal law and judicial orders within the courthouse.
  • Report unusual occurrences to supervisors and managers.
  • Monitor alarms and radio traffic, dispatching as needed.
  • Address fire alarms, burglary alarms, and criminal acts appropriately.
  • Screen and inspect vehicles and pedestrians entering/exiting the facility.
  • Maintain necessary licensing, certifications, and training records.
  • Use communication devices according to established rules.
  • Monitor equipment and report any loss or damage.
  • Log property pass numbers for authorized movements.
  • Ensure security of government property and detain personnel when necessary.
  • Conduct regular patrols and inspections of buildings and facilities.
  • Issue badges or passes to authorized personnel.
  • Monitor electronic access control and report violations.
  • Grant access to areas during non-working hours as per procedures.
  • Perform random surveillance for unauthorized activity.
  • Provide security support for scheduled events or emergencies as requested.
  • Maintain activity logs and administrative documents as required.
  • Cooperate with law enforcement and testify in judicial proceedings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable civilian law enforcement experience or equivalent military law enforcement experience.
  • Completion of a certified law enforcement training academy or program.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check, drug test, and physical exam.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted state driver's license.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to meet medical/physical fitness requirements.
  • Free from felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions.
