About the position

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for organizing, directing, and overseeing the nursing team and programs within a skilled nursing facility. This role ensures compliance with facility policies and state and federal regulations while providing high-quality care. The DON has administrative and managerial authority, overseeing the functions, activities, and training of the nursing staff, and is on call 24/7 for clinical and staffing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and supervise within the prescribed scope of practice for a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state.
  • Develop, review, and revise the philosophy, objectives, and standards of practice for the nursing department.
  • Make administrative decisions in the absence of the administrator.
  • Review, maintain, and update the nursing department job descriptions and policies and procedures as needed.
  • Review and follow the nursing department's budgetary guidelines for operation.
  • Ensure staffing schedules are created fairly, updated routinely, and posted for the staff.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan facility services and activities as needed.
  • Participate in establishing a competitive wage, salary, and benefit plan for nursing department staff.
  • Participate in pre-screening resident referrals for appropriateness of admission.
  • Participate in marketing events and initiatives as requested.
  • Ensure the admission, transfer, and discharge processes are followed.
  • Cooperate in the development and implementation of an interdisciplinary approach to health care services.
  • Ensure RD/Nutrition recommendations are completed timely.
  • Ensure Pharmacy recommendations are completed timely.
  • Ensure monthly and weekly weights are recorded in the clinical record per facility policy.
  • Attend Quality Assurance and Risk Management Meetings, prepare reports, and participate in sub-committees as assigned.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing various medical forms, reports, evaluations, and audits.
  • Verify staffing every day and assist with call-offs and staff cancellations.
  • Conduct facility investigations in a professional manner with attention to detail.
  • Report and investigate all allegations of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment in accordance with facility policy and regulations.

Requirements

  • Must have and maintain an unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) licensure issued by the State Board of Nursing.
  • Must have valid CPR certification and maintain active CPR certification throughout employment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills in nursing administration and practice.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations specific to nursing home operation.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 60-70lbs frequently and stand/walk throughout the scheduled shift.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and office equipment.
