About the position

The CNC Technician at Gentex Optics is responsible for operating and maintaining CNC machines to produce high-quality parts for the manufacturing of ophthalmic lenses and related products. This role involves setting up machines, writing and editing CNC programs, and ensuring that all produced parts meet strict quality standards. The technician will work closely with engineering and production teams to support the manufacturing process and contribute to a high-performance team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for quality parts produced on CNC machines such as lathes and milling machines.
  • Setup and operate a full range of machine shop equipment to close tolerances with little or no supervision.
  • Fabricate fixtures, tooling, and mold components to meet engineering needs.
  • Check new molds for dimensions, identification, and angles.
  • Load parts, prove tapes, operate controls, set offsets, perform simple edits, deburr, and inspect quality parts for conformance to requirements.
  • Study and interpret drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.
  • Write programs for CNC controlled machines using Mastercam software and download these programs into machines using network, discs, or thumb drives.
  • Read, understand, and edit G and M codes in programs to make corrections or adjustments.
  • Apply knowledge of precision measuring instruments and their application.
  • Read drawings and specifications with an understanding of geometric tolerance and dimensions.
  • Understand tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts, and other accessories used on various machines.
  • Follow written and oral instructions and adapt to a changing work environment.
  • Detect equipment malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjust machines as required to ensure quality production.
  • Communicate with supervisors, engineers, production control, quality, and other shop personnel for assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues.
  • Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience operating CNC machines such as lathes and milling machines in a manufacturing environment.
  • Completion of a 2 Year technical program in related fields.
