About the position

The Medical Assistant II position at Massachusetts General Hospital involves providing support to physicians and nurses in an outpatient office setting. The role focuses on maintaining patient flow efficiency, assisting with therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and training new staff. The Medical Assistant II is responsible for various clinical tasks, ensuring a high standard of patient care and collaboration within the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties that are the responsibility of a Medical Assistant I.
  • Review daily schedule of patients and ensure all appropriate preparations are in place.
  • Greet patients and escort them into the exam room.
  • Obtain basic patient vital statistics and prepare patients for physician evaluation.
  • Maintain patient exam rooms, including setup and stocking.
  • Clean instruments and equipment using appropriate sterilization techniques.
  • Complete requisitions for diagnostic tests for physician review.
  • Assist with specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Deliver laboratory specimens to designated areas.
  • Prepare procedural medications under supervision of physician/NP.
  • Escort patients to desired destinations when needed.
  • Assist in sorting and follow-up of laboratory test results under nurse guidelines.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities related to patient care.
  • Orient and train new staff members.
  • Perform projects specific to the Medical Assistant role as directed by the Ambulatory Nurse Director.
  • Complete and submit FMLA paperwork for patients and families.
  • Complete prior authorization requests to insurance carriers.
  • Maintain and update the Medical Assistant Manual.
  • Maintain clinical supplies, including stocking and ordering.
  • Track clinical equipment in conjunction with the floor manager.
  • Provide inservice to colleagues on new equipment and procedures.
  • Actively participate in unit planning and management.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant and Basic Life Support certification recommended.
  • 1-2 years of prior clinical experience, preferably in an ambulatory Ob/Gyn setting.
  • Current Basic CPR certification preferred.
  • Ability to perform Non-stress tests if working in OB division.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong clinical and judgment skills.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work successfully as a team player.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of varied medical procedures, such as vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, sterile procedure.
