The Medical Assistant at Phoenix Children's Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting licensed healthcare professionals by performing various clinical and administrative tasks. This position emphasizes professionalism, ethical conduct, and adherence to hospital policies while ensuring high standards of patient care and interdepartmental collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Measure and record vital signs, growth parameters, medical histories, and signs and symptoms into the electronic health record.
  • Communicate patient-related information to the licensed healthcare provider.
  • Perform electrocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, and other diagnostic testing within the Medical Assisting scope.
  • Collect laboratory specimens, including blood specimens.
  • Perform point of care testing.
  • Prepare and administer medication at the direction of a licensed healthcare provider, adhering to regulations and guidelines.
  • Perform routine screening tests.
  • Assist the provider with exams and procedures.
  • Remove sutures, change dressings, and apply bandages and other first aid procedures.
  • Prepare and instruct patients about examinations, diagnostic tests, medications, special diets, and health maintenance.
  • Dispose of bio-hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA safety standards and hospital policies.
  • Demonstrate infection control standards related to hand washing and standard precautions.
  • Follow PCH and OSHA safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • Uphold HIPAA regulations.
  • Process and communicate prescription refills to pharmacies as authorized by a licensed healthcare provider.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for medication and DME.
  • Screen telephone calls and take accurate clinical messages within the Medical Assisting scope of practice.
  • Return patient calls with provider-directed instructions.
  • Assist patients and providers in completing documentation and paperwork.
  • Utilize medication reconciliation tools within EHR.
  • Clean and restock exam rooms.
  • In some clinics, serve as a witness to cycle counting and wasting of controlled substances.
  • Follow appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct.
  • Remain up to date with certifications, company mandated training, and professional development.

Requirements

  • Current and continuous certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) or American Medical Technologists (RMA) in the field of Medical Assisting or the ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.
  • Exhibit professionalism, strong ethical conduct, and integrity at all times.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and maintain high standards of work performance.
