About the position

The Member Coach position at the YMCA is designed to enhance member satisfaction and retention by providing coaching and support to individuals seeking to improve their health and wellness. This role involves building connections with members, offering fitness education, and developing sustainable lifestyle goals to foster a supportive community environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and coaches lifestyle change using Coaching Techniques and LISTEN FIRST approach.
  • Builds member connections to staff, programs of interest, and the YMCA mission.
  • Develops short-term sustainable goals and provides fitness education when applicable.
  • Assesses and supports changing member needs through regular re-assessments.
  • Monitors participants for exercise adherence and facility utilization.
  • Offers recommendations on exercises suitable for all fitness levels and age ranges.
  • Utilizes available resources, including other staff, to support members.
  • Provides basic information about nutrition, cardiovascular fitness, strength training, and exercise programs.
  • Trains and coaches within defined scope and refers members to specialized support when necessary.
  • Works to increase membership retention and participation through engagement initiatives.
  • Develops and executes new ideas, such as accountability programs, to keep members engaged.
  • Creates and instructs beginner classes to introduce new members to fitness activities.
  • Reaches out to low usage members to offer complementary coaching sessions and encourage participation.
  • Conducts tours for potential new members to promote membership.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must hold or complete Listen First training, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications upon hiring.
  • Knowledge of wellness and fitness education principles, including strength and cardiovascular training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience with a variety of strength equipment and free weights.
  • Knowledge of current fitness issues, trends, and offerings.
