About the position

The City Attorney's Office (CAO) is seeking a Paralegal I to support civil litigation efforts defending the City in state and federal court. This role involves drafting legal documents, managing court deadlines, conducting legal research, and maintaining electronic litigation files, while interacting with attorneys, clients, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit, proofread, and serve legal documents including pleadings, motions, civil subpoenas, and discovery requests.
  • Schedule, monitor, and calendar court deadlines, meetings, depositions, and other case-related events.
  • File documents in state and federal court.
  • Use Westlaw to perform legal research and cite checks.
  • Draft correspondence on behalf of CAO attorneys.
  • Prepare and distribute documents and reports for attorneys, staff, City Council, and the public.
  • Organize, process, and maintain electronic litigation files.
  • Assist in the preparation of documents and exhibits needed for trial or other court proceedings.
  • Research and locate various legal documents for departmental use.
  • Conduct client interviews and maintain general contact with the client departments.
  • Locate and interview witnesses.
  • Conduct investigations, statistical, and documentary research.
  • Summarize depositions, discovery, and document productions.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of tort law and statutes used in asserting claims against municipalities.
  • Basic knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.
  • Basic knowledge of filing state and federal documents, including electronically on PACER.
  • Ability to summarize facts and evidence and prepare basic litigation documents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and logically in oral and written form.
  • Ability and willingness to use technology in research and writing assignments.
  • Ability to create spreadsheets to capture and analyze data.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient with Adobe Acrobat and online/cloud-based file-sharing protocols.
  • Motivated and self-directed with ability to manage several tasks at one time and meet multiple deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with remote meeting platforms including MS Teams, Zoom, and WebEx.
