About the position

The Part-Time (.5) School Counselor at Albuquerque Public Schools is responsible for implementing a developmental and results-based school counseling program that aligns with the ASCA National Model. This role focuses on promoting equity and supporting the academic, career, and personal/social development of students. The counselor will collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure student success and will utilize comprehensive counseling strategies to address the needs of all students.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model and New Mexico School Counselor Competencies.
  • Serve as a leader in the school and community to promote and support student success.
  • Maintain professional relationships and work cooperatively with administration, employees, the community, and other professionals.
  • Advocate and collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders to promote student success.
  • Develop and implement a school counseling curriculum that addresses all students' needs, including closing-the-gap activities.
  • Facilitate individual student planning, including goal setting, decision making, and transition planning.
  • Assist students in understanding the importance of post-secondary education and career opportunities.
  • Provide responsive services, including individual and group counseling, crisis counseling, and referrals.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data to monitor and improve student behavior, attendance, and achievement.
  • Conduct program audits annually to assess the implementation of the ASCA National Model and set program goals.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree in School Counseling or a Master's Degree in Counseling with required school counseling program coursework.
  • Valid New Mexico License in School Counseling.
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing a comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model.
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three years of experience in a public school setting.
  • Knowledge of District policies on child abuse/neglect, intervening with potential suicide, bullying, and sexual harassment.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
