About the position

The Outreach Specialist at Covenant House New Orleans plays a crucial role in providing a safe and welcoming environment for youth seeking services. This part-time position involves advocating for and delivering direct care services to at-risk youth both on the streets and at the facility. The specialist will engage in various outreach activities, including street outreach, school/agency outreach, and aftercare support, while embodying the agency's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate and maintain positive, professional, and mentoring relationships with youth and staff.
  • Promote a peaceful, healing environment using trauma-informed care and positive youth development principles.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled street outreach in the New Orleans metropolitan area, distributing food, clothing, and literature.
  • Seek out and assist victims of human trafficking and prostitution.
  • Utilize media, including texting and social media, to engage youth and community members.
  • Participate in the UNITY for the Homeless citywide outreach program.
  • Serve as a community liaison with local service partners, businesses, schools, and community groups.
  • Implement a van/foot patrol schedule with resident youth volunteers to maximize outreach contacts.
  • Transport youth to and from Covenant House and assist with transportation for offsite services/events.
  • Serve as a client advocate to engage support/social service agencies when necessary.
  • Aid in developing plans to reach and serve diverse youth populations.
  • Maintain proper documentation of client and outreach files in required information systems.
  • Ensure compliance with grant contract terms.
  • Attend all trainings and integrate learned information into responsibilities.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social services preferred or a minimum of 2 years experience working with at-risk youth or special needs populations.
  • Prior experience with youth who have experienced homelessness, trauma, or emotional challenges using a trauma-informed approach.
  • Emotional and intellectual maturity and stability.
  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to make referrals.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability and willingness to do street canvassing.
  • Valid driver's license.
