About the position

The Patient Access Specialist plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by ensuring accurate and timely registration of patients. This position involves interacting with patients, obtaining necessary information for billing and insurance purposes, and providing excellent customer service while adhering to HIPAA regulations. The specialist will rotate through various departments, including emergency and outpatient services, and will be responsible for scheduling appointments and managing patient inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Register patients accurately and timely by obtaining identifying and biographical data.
  • Schedule appointments as deemed appropriate by the department.
  • Perform patient registration activities including preregistration and obtaining insurance information.
  • Answer phones and direct calls courteously and efficiently.
  • Prepare patient liability estimations for services.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to provide service to patients and colleagues.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as Microsoft systems, calculators, and photocopiers.
  • Work with the Pre-service Center to obtain or change authorizations as required.
  • Transport and escort patients via wheelchair as needed.
  • Inform patients of delays in appointment times when requested.
  • Call physicians or labs when patients arrive without necessary scripts.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and complete safety-related competencies.
  • Monitor and review diagnostic scripts to ensure correct exams are performed and billed.
  • Create CDs of patient exams and digitize images into the PACS system.
  • Call patients prior to procedural testing to confirm appointments and prep information.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 and ICD-10 CPT coding and medical terminology
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
  • Experience with information systems and proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software.
