About the position

The Pharmacy Technician position at the U.S. Government's Veterans Health Administration involves providing essential support in the pharmacy department, ensuring optimal care and timely service to patients. The role requires national certification and the ability to work autonomously, while also mentoring lower-grade technicians. The technician will be responsible for accurately preparing prescriptions, maintaining a clean work environment, and complying with various regulations and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interpret, fill, and prepare prescriptions for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, ensuring all stock and equipment are properly organized.
  • Record expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt.
  • Perform monthly inspections to ensure proper storage of medications and remove soon-to-expire drugs.
  • Participate actively in the pharmacy training program for students and staff.
  • Complete all mandatory training in a timely manner.
  • Document controlled substance items in automated secured cabinets and ensure proper handoffs occur.
  • Assist with investigating and resolving discrepancies in controlled substances.
  • Demonstrate competence in good manufacturing practices and sterile techniques.
  • Assemble prescriptions correctly and verify patient information using VA software.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • National certification by PTCB or ExCPT is required for pharmacy technicians at this grade level.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and background/security investigation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two years of health-system pharmacy experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy automation systems such as Pyxis, Scriptpro, and Parata Packager.
