About the position

The Preparation/Recovery Technician plays a crucial role in monitoring and caring for animals during the critical recovery phase post-surgery. This position involves preparing animals for surgery, administering medications, and ensuring their well-being throughout the recovery process. The technician will work closely with veterinary staff and study directors to communicate the medical status of the animals and maintain a clean and efficient work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor animals during the initial post-operative recovery phase, including performing TPRs (temperature, pulse, respiration) and auscultation of the heart and lungs.
  • Assess pain at incision sites, change wound dressings, and administer medications as prescribed.
  • Prepare animals for surgery, including anesthetic calculations, sedation, induction, intubation, and IV catheter placement.
  • Monitor anesthesia and collect specimens during surgical procedures.
  • Document physiological data during surgical prep and recovery, including medication administration.
  • Dispense medications according to veterinarian protocols.
  • Collect necessary lab work such as blood, fecal, and urine samples.
  • Communicate with veterinary staff, supervisors, and study directors regarding the medical status of animals.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain gas anesthesia machines, autoclaves, and other surgical equipment.
  • Maintain an organized and clean work area in surgical prep and recovery.

Requirements

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or ALAT certification preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology required.
