About the position

The Processing Tech I position at ARUP Laboratories involves working under direct supervision to learn the proper handling of specimens received at the central facility and preparing them for laboratory testing. This role includes responsibilities such as matching patient information, data entry, aliquoting, and scanning documents, contributing to the efficient processing of specimens for over one million patients each month.

Responsibilities

  • Read and sign all department specific SOPs and Safety Manual.
  • Attend Specimen Processing team and staff meetings.
  • Immediately process specimens as they become available.
  • Enter patient demographics and process specimens/orders using the appropriate applications.
  • Order all tests indicated on the requisition.
  • Process all manual and electronically transmitted tests on submitted paperwork.
  • Properly comment any additional information on the requisition/packing list.
  • Follow department process to resolve issues when problems are identified.
  • Handle and label all specimens and paperwork appropriately.
  • Recognize and appropriately handle all specimen types per corporate and departmental procedure.
  • Document all specimen receipt information as outlined in departmental procedures.
  • Ensure all appropriate identifiers are checked on all received specimens/paperwork and electronically.
  • Handle specimens requiring a reroute or to be shared properly.
  • Place processed specimens on the automated track, or at the appropriate temperature for manual sorting, or deliver to the testing laboratory at the proper temperature if automated delivery systems are not available.
  • Process specimens at all three temperatures and follow the appropriate procedures for all manual and electronically transmitted orders.
  • Properly operate the biological safety cabinet.
  • Proficiently use the Internal Test Directory (ITD) or applicable test information catalog as related to accessioning and client submissions/inquiries.
  • Aliquot specimens according to procedure using the proper safety equipment.
  • Know ARUP and University Division laboratories and able to determine their locations, hours of operations, and general functions.
  • Assist the management team in handling more complex processing needs including specimen searches and processing compromised shipments when needed.
  • Observe principles of data security and patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with patients, co-workers and other health care professionals.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and regulations including proper dress code and using proper protective clothing and other equipment.
  • Perform cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Assist with departmental projects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent or better in Other or related field.
  • Must be able to maintain the department quality, productivity, and reliability requirements.
  • After completion of training, must successfully pass the departmental competency testing exam with a score of 90% or higher.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year of data entry experience.
  • 1 year of laboratory experience.
