About the position

The Seasonal Fine Gardener position at The Trustees of Reservations involves providing high-quality care for the Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens. This role includes hands-on gardening tasks, leading volunteer groups, and engaging with the public, all while ensuring the maintenance and aesthetic appeal of the gardens. The position is part-time and seasonal, running from April to November, and requires a commitment to the organization's mission of conservation and public enjoyment of natural spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, maintenance, and care of permanent and seasonal plantings, including perennial and shrub borders, tree care, and pathways.
  • Motivate and lead volunteer groups in the maintenance and care of plant collections, ensuring adherence to planting plans and proper plant identification.
  • Manage and maintain garden infrastructure, including irrigation systems, pathways, and general garden cleanliness.
  • Interact positively with the public and provide information about the gardens.
  • Collaborate with staff and consultants on garden construction and care, providing technical advice and occasionally leading tours.
  • Communicate effectively with the Southeast Gardens Senior Horticulturist and utilize Microsoft applications for record-keeping and communication.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three or more years of hands-on experience in the public garden field with increasing responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of arboriculture, perennials, annual displays, woody plant care, and pruning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of horticultural care, conservation, and stewardship practices.
  • Ability to inspire confidence and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Commitment to the values and mission of The Trustees.
  • Ability to handle physical demands, including climbing ladders and lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Experience using hand and power tools and maintaining equipment.
  • Experience supervising staff, interns, or volunteers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or associate degree in horticulture, botany, or a related field.
  • Pesticide Applicator's License.
