About the position
The Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) position is a full-time role dedicated to providing one-on-one support for a high school student with a significant cognitive disability. The interpreter will facilitate effective communication between the student and educational staff, ensuring the student can participate fully in the classroom environment. This role requires collaboration with teachers and support staff to adapt communication strategies that meet the student's unique needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 sign language interpreting for a high school student with a significant cognitive disability.
- Facilitate communication between the student and teachers, peers, and staff using American Sign Language (ASL).
- Work alongside a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher to support the student's academic and social participation in the classroom.
- Collaborate with educational staff to adapt communication strategies that best support the student's individual needs.
- Ensure the student can actively participate in lessons, discussions, and activities by providing accurate and clear interpretation.
- Maintain professional confidentiality and respect the student's privacy.
Requirements
- Minimum 1+ years interpreter experience required.
- Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (e.g., RID, EIPA, NIC, or equivalent).
- Strong knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and ability to interpret effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively with educators, support staff, and families.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting students with diverse learning needs.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or education in special education or related fields is a plus.
Nice-to-haves
- Previous experience working with students with disabilities, particularly those with significant cognitive impairments.
