About the position

The Signal Apprentice position at BNSF Railway is a full-time apprenticeship role focused on training individuals for various signal-related positions, including Signalman and Signal Maintainer. This role involves hands-on training and responsibilities related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of signal devices essential for the safe operation of the railroad. The position requires a commitment to safety and the ability to work in diverse and challenging environments, with significant travel requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction, reconditioning, installation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and testing of wayside signal devices.
  • Load and unload supplies, install underground and overhead cables, including trenching and hand digging, and work around or operate heavy machinery.
  • Work on or around highway grade crossings, climb signal masts, bridges, and ladders, and handle cables and wires for electrical connections.
  • Use various power and non-power tools, including shovels, picks, axes, sledgehammers, micrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, computer-based systems, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, tape measures, drills, and power saws.
  • Operate equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, boom trucks, and directional boring machines.

Requirements

  • Able to work in the US without company sponsorship now and in the future.
  • At least 18 years of age or will be by the anticipated start date.
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time (Fly, Drive, or Ride).
  • Able to work safely in diverse working conditions.
  • Able to work the specified shifts/hours and meet travel requirements.
  • Able to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally and 15 to 30 lbs frequently.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors and discriminate between verbal and non-verbal sounds in the work environment.
  • Able to use hands and hand tools effectively.

  • Experience in construction or maintenance work.
