About the position

The Transportation Maintenance Student Worker position at the State of Minnesota offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in transportation maintenance and bridge projects. This part-time role involves assisting with various tasks related to materials testing, bridge maintenance, and inspections, providing valuable hands-on experience in the field while supporting the mission of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Materials Lab in performing various materials property tests on materials used for road and bridge construction.
  • Assist the Auger Crew with field investigations of pavements and soils.
  • Assist Material Engineers with collecting and compiling data from historical sources.
  • Support bridge staff on program bridge projects and documentation.
  • Participate in field activities with bridge maintenance crews, including painting and structural repairs.
  • Assist with bridge inspections and projects such as bridge replacement and reconstruction.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Knowledge and application of advanced mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of computer software used in testing and design work and ability to use Windows-based operating systems.
  • Ability to understand technical documents and follow instructions.
  • Currently enrolled or enrolling within three months as a full-time student in a post-secondary or graduate program with a GPA of at least 2.0.
  • Valid Class D Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in Carpentry, Masonry, Construction Management, Laboratory Science, or a related program.
  • Full-time student with a GPA of at least 3.0.
