About the position

The Visiting Faculty position for the IHP Cities in the 21st Century program is a seasonal role focused on teaching and facilitating experiential learning for undergraduate students studying urban issues across multiple countries. The faculty member will travel with students to various urban locations, engaging them in critical inquiry and analysis of social justice and urbanization challenges. This role requires a commitment to experiential education and the ability to support students throughout their study abroad experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach two courses: Urban Research Methods and Fieldwork Ethics, and Urban Politics and Development.
  • Facilitate student learning through processing of non-lecture program components and providing timely feedback.
  • Participate regularly in all country program activities including guest speakers, site visits, and other non-lecture components.
  • Collaborate with the Provost & Dean of Faculty, Associate Deans, Program Director, and Country Coordinators to resolve academic, administrative, and student affairs issues.
  • Ensure the health and safety of students in partnership with SIT Student Affairs and local staff.
  • Check-in and assist students traveling on official group flights through immigration.
  • Collect receipts for expenses and complete expense reports in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree (PhD or equivalent; All But Dissertation considered) in political economy, sociology, geography, political science, or other social science field relevant to critical urban studies.
  • Expertise in at least one critical urban issue and general knowledge of urbanization history and critical urban studies.
  • Experience teaching at the college level with a strong commitment to experiential learning and non-didactic methods.
  • Experience living and working abroad, ideally in at least one of the program countries listed.
  • Qualitative research experience in urban studies or professional experience in urban community development, urban planning, or urban social movements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with urban social movements.
  • Familiarity with the cultural and political contexts of the program countries.
