About The Position

The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) is seeking a Spanish-English Interpreter for its Language Services Unit. This role involves providing interpretation, transcription, and translation services for various stakeholders in the criminal justice system, including witnesses, victims, and defendants. The interpreter will work under supervision to ensure accurate communication in both languages, contributing to the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in translation and interpretation.
• Court interpreter certification or two years of experience in general or legal translation and/or interpretation.
• Fluency in Spanish and English, both oral and written.
• Knowledge of transcription and translation techniques.
• High-level proficiency using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe.
• Experience using multi-media players such as VLC and Audacity.
• Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Experience working with witnesses, victims, and defendants in a legal setting.

Nice To Haves

• Minimum two years of experience in general or legal translation and/or interpretation.
• Possess court interpreter certification.
• Ability to interact professionally and ethically at all times.
• Adept at cultural and linguistic differences.
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to multi-task.

Responsibilities

• Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation bi-directionally between English and Spanish telephonically, via video remote, and in-person as required.
• Translate a variety of materials in both language directions, including legal documents and personal statements.
• Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings using industry-related equipment and software.
• Proofread translations and transcriptions for accuracy.
• Perform effective research on terminology as needed.
• Render court testimony on translations and transcriptions as needed.
• Process requests for language services and update Unit database.
• Adhere to all DANY employee policies and Unit standards related to interpretation and translations.
