About the position

The Foreign Language Teacher at Denison High School is responsible for developing students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in comprehending, speaking, reading, and writing a language other than English. The teacher will also foster an understanding and appreciation of the native culture of the countries where the language is primarily spoken. This position is under the general supervision of the School Principal and involves creating a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers foreign language education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in a language other than English, including comprehension, grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary and proper word usage.
  • Develops student understanding and appreciation of the cultures and mores of countries where the language is predominantly spoken.
  • Works with students to prepare materials for literary publications and contests.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and establishes standards of student behavior.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and maintains inventory records.

Requirements

  • State Certification as a foreign language teacher in the particular language taught.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Successful prior foreign language teaching experience is a plus.
