About the position

The Spanish Teacher position at POIC & RAHS in Portland, OR, is a vital role responsible for delivering high-quality classroom instruction, developing engaging curriculum, and fostering program growth activities. The teacher will adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet the diverse needs and interests of students, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to thrive in a supportive learning environment. The position requires establishing shared expectations with students regarding classroom behaviors, norms, and habits, and planning instructional activities that promote active learning and engagement. In addition to classroom instruction, the teacher will evaluate student academic and social progress, maintain accurate student records, and monitor individual student progress using the school’s database system, Synergy. Collaboration is key in this role, as the teacher will work across all school sites to develop a unique and rigorous curriculum that inspires students to understand the interconnectedness of various subject areas. The teacher will also prepare materials and classrooms for class activities, develop auxiliary curriculum in collaboration with other teachers, and confer with parents and guardians regarding student progress and interventions. The teacher will serve as an advisor to a group of 15 students, supporting their social and emotional growth as well as their organizational skills. Regular attendance and a spirit of cooperation in a team environment are essential, along with the ability to take direction from the manager. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the mission of POIC + RAHS, which is committed to the success of youth through high-quality services in education, mentoring, family outreach, and employment training.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.
  • Establishes shared expectations with students regarding behaviors, norms, and habits in the classroom.
  • Plans and delivers instructional activities that facilitate active learning and engagement experiences.
  • Fosters a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Evaluates student academic and social progress.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct student records as required by law.
  • Monitors the progress of individual students using the school database system (Synergy).
  • Works across all school sites to collaboratively develop a unique, engaging, and rigorous curriculum.
  • Develops and designs program features which will inspire students to develop new understandings about the interconnectedness between subject areas.
  • Designs and adapts curriculum to meet the diverse needs of our student population.
  • Prepares materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Develops auxiliary curriculum by working collaboratively with other teachers from across all school campuses.
  • Confers with parents, guardians, and school community stakeholders regarding student progress and aids in planning specific interventions.
  • Performs the role of an advisor to a group of 15 students and helps support individual students' social and emotional growth and organizational skills.
  • Maintains punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Respectfully takes direction from the manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related subject.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with high school youth in a school or community-based organization setting.
  • Oregon Teacher License is strongly preferred; non-certified teachers may be considered with relevant and/or exceptional experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Specialized computer skills, including proficiency in databases, spreadsheets, report writing, project management, word processing, presentation creation/editing, email communication, and scheduling software.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
