About the position

Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School is seeking a dedicated and passionate High School Spanish Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. This full-time position is classified as exempt and spans a 10-month period, with the teacher reporting directly to the High School Principal. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality instruction to our high school students, demonstrating effective planning and preparation, instructional skills, and classroom management. The Spanish Teacher will engage in continuous professional development and collaborate with other educators within their department and across various content areas to enhance the educational experience for students. The role requires a deep understanding of the Spanish language and culture, as well as the ability to create meaningful and relevant learning experiences for students. Teachers will be expected to integrate technology into their lessons, develop clear and logical unit and lesson plans aligned with educational standards, and differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners. The Spanish Teacher will also utilize various instructional strategies to promote student engagement and learning, monitor student progress, and provide constructive feedback to support their academic growth. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Spanish Teacher will be expected to maintain a positive classroom environment, enforce school behavior policies, and communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues. Professional development is a key component of this position, and teachers will be encouraged to participate in workshops, conferences, and other growth opportunities to enhance their teaching practices. The successful candidate will contribute to the school community by fostering positive relationships with students and parents, collaborating with colleagues, and supporting school initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit an understanding of and skills relevant to the subject area(s) taught.
  • Demonstrate an ability to make topics and activities meaningful and relevant to each student.
  • Integrate available technology resources compatible with students' needs and abilities.
  • Develop unit and lesson plans that are clear, logical, and sequential aligned to standards and regents exams, when appropriate.
  • Plan with appropriate specialist(s) to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Link present content/skills with past and future learning experiences.
  • Effectively use various instructional strategies to differentiate learning for all students.
  • Effectively use questioning strategies to engage students and promote learning.
  • Monitor students' understanding of the lesson and adjust teaching when appropriate.
  • Maximize student learning by providing opportunities for all learners to participate actively and successfully.
  • Explain content and demonstrate skills in a variety of ways to meet the needs of all students.
  • Hold each learner individually responsible for learning.
  • Use results of a variety of assessments to monitor and modify instruction as needed.
  • Effectively use both teacher-made and standardized tests to measure student performance.
  • Use oral, non-verbal, and written forms of student assessment.
  • Organize, maintain, and use records of student progress to make effective instructional decisions.
  • Continuously monitor students' progress before, during, and after instruction, and provide meaningful feedback.
  • Demonstrate competence in the use of acceptable grading/ranking/scoring practices in recording and reporting student achievement.
  • Use precise language and acceptable oral expression and written communication.
  • Articulate clear learning goals and instructional procedures for the lesson to the students.
  • Model caring, fairness, courtesy, respect, and active listening.
  • Seek and maintain positive interactions with students in all school settings.
  • Enforce the school's student behavior policy.
  • Communicate clear expectations about behavior to students and parents.
  • Actively monitor student behavior and provide feedback in a constructive manner to students and parents.
  • Create a physical setting and establish routines that promote learning and minimize disruption.
  • Structure transitions in an efficient and constructive manner.
  • Manage emergency situations, as they occur, in school settings.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and deportment.
  • Interact with colleagues and students in an ethical and professional manner.

  • Select appropriate channels for resolving concerns and problems, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Complete all classroom and school assignments and responsibilities in a timely and effective manner.
  • Participate in professional growth activities including conferences, workshops, coursework, and committees or membership in professional organizations.
  • Explore and apply knowledge and information about new or improved methods of instruction and related issues.
  • Identify areas of personal strength and weakness and seek improvement of skills and professional performance.
  • Initiate communication with parents or guardians concerning student progress or problems in a timely manner.
  • Respond promptly to parental concerns and encourage parental involvement within the school.
  • Interact with parents and the community by providing useful information regarding the school.
  • Work cooperatively with community members in carrying out school and community-sponsored functions.
  • Build collaborative relationships with colleagues, sharing teaching insights and coordinating student learning.
  • Serve on school committees and support school activities.
  • Contribute to the development of the profession by serving as a teacher, mentor, peer coach, and/or supervisor to practicing teachers, student teachers, or interns.
  • Support school goals and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish, with expert command over both languages.
  • At least 2 to 5 years prior teaching experience in middle/high school.
  • Demonstrated success working in non-traditional and/or urban school settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with educational technology (SMART Board, student laptops, etc.).
  • Knowledge or ability to use SIS (student information systems) or online learning platforms (Schoology, Google Classroom, PowerSchool, and Canvas).
  • NYS certification in Spanish preferred.
