About the position

The Spanish Teacher position at Nansemond River High School is designed to foster students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in the Spanish language, encompassing comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the teacher will also cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the cultures associated with Spanish-speaking countries. The role requires the development and administration of a Foreign Language education curriculum that aligns with the school district's goals and objectives, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. In this position, the teacher will create a safe and conducive classroom environment that promotes individualized and small group instruction. Responsibilities include developing lesson plans and instructional materials that translate into effective learning experiences, challenging students, and optimizing instructional time. The teacher will instruct students in various aspects of the Spanish language, including grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and literature, while also fostering an appreciation for the cultural nuances of Spanish-speaking countries. Ongoing assessment of student learning and progress is a critical component of this role, requiring the teacher to modify instructional methods to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with special needs. The teacher will also maintain accurate records of student activities, achievements, and attendance, while encouraging parental involvement and effective communication with both students and parents. Collaboration with other professional staff members and participation in faculty meetings and committees are also essential duties of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer the Foreign Language education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in Spanish, including comprehension, grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary and proper word usage, colloquialisms, communication and translation of literature.
  • Develop student understanding and appreciation of the cultures and mores of countries where the language is the predominant or a major means of communication.
  • Work with students and others to prepare materials for inclusion in literary publications, contests, etc.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintain inventory records.

Requirements

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Spanish Education.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of the Spanish language, in terms of grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, and literature.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
