About the position

The Executive Chamber is seeking a highly motivated attorney to serve as Special Counsel and Chief of Staff to the Counsel. This role is critical in advising the Counsel and managing the Counsel's office, ensuring effective collaboration with various teams and state agencies. The position requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to navigate complex legal and strategic issues within the public sector.

Responsibilities

  • Advise the Counsel and manage the Counsel's office.
  • Work with other Chamber teams to ensure appropriate collaboration with Counsel's office.
  • Assist with management of major Counsel's office processes, including review of legislation and regulations, and oversight of major litigation.
  • Manage information flow between Counsel and internal and external parties to eliminate bottlenecks and strategically manage Counsel's calendar.
  • Support Assistant Counsels and Deputy Counsels, ensuring effective flow of information and eliminating bottlenecks.
  • Produce daily digests and decision point memos for Counsel where approval is needed.
  • Manage hiring and professional development for Counsel's Office, including training and CLEs.
  • Organize agency counsel meetings and develop methods to ensure agencies receive necessary support from Counsel's office.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and a member in good standing with the New York State Bar.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant post-bar legal work experience.
  • Substantial experience working within and leading cross-functional teams in the public sector.
  • Experience managing a principal, including organizing and facilitating decision-making processes.
  • Strong proficiency with Google and Microsoft software products including Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Word, Excel, OneDrive, SharePoint, Power Point and Outlook/Exchange.
  • Ability to make excellent judgments and exercise critical, analytical, and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage a varied and high-volume workload.
  • Excellent communication skills with attention to detail, including the ability to communicate complex information and edit others' work product.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with colleagues and senior leadership.

Benefits

  • Salary range from $185,000 to $195,000 annually.
  • Full-time permanent position with a 37.5-hour workweek.
  • Mandatory overtime may be required.
