About the position

The Whittier City School District is seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Teacher with a focus on Autism for our Self-Contained Classrooms (SDC). This position is designed for educators who are committed to providing high-quality education and support to students with autism and other special needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the unique challenges faced by these students and will be equipped with the skills necessary to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. As a Special Education Teacher, you will be responsible for developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. You will work closely with parents, support staff, and other educators to ensure that students receive the appropriate resources and support to thrive academically and socially. Your role will also involve assessing student progress, adapting instructional strategies, and utilizing various teaching methods to engage students effectively. In addition to classroom instruction, you will participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and stay current with best practices in special education. You will also be an advocate for your students, promoting their rights and ensuring they have access to the necessary services and accommodations. Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with autism and other special needs.
  • Assess and monitor student progress, adapting instructional strategies as needed.
  • Collaborate with parents, support staff, and other educators to provide comprehensive support for students.
  • Utilize various teaching methods and resources to engage students effectively in learning activities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in special education.
  • Advocate for students' rights and ensure access to necessary services and accommodations.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters respect and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Education Specialist Mod/Severe - Extensive Support Needs Credential or Education Specialist Mild/Moderate Credential.
  • Autism Authorization.
  • EL Authorization (if not embedded in credential).
  • Copy of CBEST.
  • Copy of Transcripts.
  • Letter of Introduction addressed to Alexis Norman, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources.
  • Resume.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (one must be from current supervisor).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with students with autism in a classroom setting.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in special education and autism education.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
