About the position

The Special Education Teacher for Emotional Disturbance (ED) will be responsible for providing specialized instruction to students in grades K-2 who have been identified with emotional disturbances. This position requires a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an LBS1 endorsement. The teacher will work collaboratively with both special education and general education staff to ensure that the educational needs of students are met according to their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The role involves developing comprehensive IEPs, including behavior intervention plans, and providing consultation and training to teachers and parents regarding strategies to support students experiencing learning or behavioral challenges. The teacher will be expected to model effective teaching strategies that cater to the diverse learning styles of students. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills are essential, as the teacher will need to assess students informally and address their learning and behavioral needs using documented data. The position also requires strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively collaborate with general education teachers, students, parents, and staff. The teacher will report directly to the building principal and will be expected to fulfill other duties as assigned. This position is contracted for 180 days, aligning with the school year, and includes a sign-on bonus for new hires, structured in two installments. Current employees in this role will receive a stipend as part of their compensation package. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive educational environment that supports the academic and emotional growth of students with special needs.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with all special education and general education staff
  • Work under the direction of the building principal
  • Provide instruction as determined by the students' IEPs
  • Participate in the development of comprehensive Individual Education Plans for identified students including behavior intervention plans
  • Provide consultation, technical assistance and training to teachers and parents of students experiencing learning or behavioral problems
  • Provide information to parents relative to strategies that can be used at home to support the school's efforts
  • Take responsibility for implementation of IEPs for students on assigned caseload
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Valid Illinois PEL with LBS1 endorsement
  • Successful teaching or student teaching experience
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills in working with general education teachers, students, parents and staff
  • Strong knowledge base of secondary curriculum
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of intervention strategies and progress monitoring experience
  • Ability to model teaching strategies to meet the needs of students' various learning styles
  • Ability to informally assess learning and/or behavioral needs of students & address those needs using documented data

Benefits

  • Sign-on bonus of $2,000 paid within 30 days of the successful candidate's start date
  • Second installment of $2,000 paid within 30 days of the start of the second school year following the successful candidate's start date
  • Stipend of $2,400 for current employees in this position
  • Salary in accordance with current SEA negotiated agreement
