About the position

The Special Education Assistant will support the educational needs of students with disabilities at Merrimac Community School. This part-time position involves working closely with teachers to implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and assist students in various school activities, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in achieving instructional objectives aligned to the Individual Education Plans (IEP) by working with individual students or small groups.
  • Provide supervision during transitions, recess, and lunch for individuals and groups of students.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to support inclusive practices and student participation in all school environments.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, recess periods, lunch periods, and bus loading.
  • Provide physical assistance with students, including lifting and bathroom assistance as needed.
  • Provide direct instruction and implement behavior support plans under the direction of teachers to individual and small groups of students.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials and maintain classroom environments as necessary.
  • Provide assistance/supervision for safety of students while riding the school bus to and from school and on field trips.
  • Assist in maintaining records and monitoring goal progress under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Carry out student health/emergency plans.
  • Carry out other job duties as assigned by the building Principal.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Obtain emergency medical training and other job-related certifications as required such as special education program aide license.
  • Prefer previous work experience with children.
  • Ability to properly handle confidential matters, emergency situations and work in a positive manner with students, staff and the community.
  • Very good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated individual who is able to complete tasks on time.
  • General clerical skills and basic computer skills.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
