About the position

The Special Education Early Childhood Strategies Teacher at Washoe County School District is responsible for providing instruction to students with special needs, particularly those with deficits in communication and social-emotional skills, often due to Autism. This position requires the teacher to implement the district's curriculum aligned with Common Core State Standards while adhering to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for each student. The teacher will create and deliver effective lesson plans, assess student progress, and modify instruction as necessary to meet the diverse needs of learners. The role also involves maintaining a positive and safe classroom environment, managing student behavior, and fostering respect and rapport among students. In addition to instructional duties, the teacher will collaborate with other service staff to provide comprehensive support to students. They will maintain accurate records of student progress and IEPs, ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines. The teacher is expected to engage with parents to promote their involvement in the IEP process and reflect on their teaching practices to enhance their professional development. The position may involve working as part of an education/assessment team to identify and implement individual objectives for students. The EC Strategies Program focuses on developmentally appropriate practices that address all areas of child development, including literacy, math readiness, and self-help skills. The teacher will utilize a variety of strategies to support students' learning and development in a small group setting, emphasizing extensive data collection to document progress. This role is crucial in providing adequate support for students requiring special needs, ensuring they have access to a rich and effective learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Administer appropriate district curriculum aligned with Common Core State Standards and IEP instructions.
  • Design and implement effective lesson components for instruction and student assessments.
  • Provide appropriate instructions, modifications, and adaptations for students with IEPs.
  • Analyze student progress and ensure compliance with assessment regulations and guidelines.
  • Create a respectful and positive classroom environment that promotes learning.
  • Maintain a safe and academically focused learning environment.
  • Manage classroom procedures and student behavior effectively.
  • Communicate learning expectations clearly to students.
  • Engage students actively in the learning process.
  • Utilize effective discussion and questioning techniques during instruction.
  • Embed assessment within instruction to monitor student understanding.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to student needs.
  • Coordinate with other service staff to provide comprehensive instruction for students.
  • Maintain accurate records and IEPs as mandated by guidelines.
  • Promote meaningful participation of parents in the IEP process.
  • Participate in professional development and community activities related to the position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with student teaching experience.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Nevada teaching license in the relevant subject area/grade level.
  • Knowledge of child development and characteristics of students with disabilities.
  • Effective teaching skills and planning abilities.
  • Skill in creating a conducive learning environment and maintaining effective relationships with staff and students.
  • Ability to utilize technology effectively in instruction and data management.

Nice-to-haves
