About The Position

The Special Education Elementary School Teacher for grades PK-6 is responsible for providing tailored educational experiences to students with special needs, ensuring their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This role involves developing and modifying curricula, collaborating with parents and staff to create Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and implementing instructional strategies that cater to diverse learning styles. The teacher will also manage classroom behavior, participate in staff development, and maintain compliance with educational regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for special education.
  • Valid certificate that matches the subject and grade level of the assignment, or demonstrate competency through state standards for special education teachers.
  • Valid ESL certification.
  • Valid Reading Academy Certificate of Completion, if applicable.
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
  • Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs.
  • Training in crisis prevention and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Training in strategies for positive behavioral supports.
  • Effective communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide students with special needs learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.
  • Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to allow students to access enrolled grade level curriculum.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
  • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies and activities.
  • Present subject matter effectively according to guidelines established by IEP, employing various instructional techniques and media.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist special education students in regular classes.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly and in the selection of instructional materials.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.
  • Consult with district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior utilizing Positive Behavior Supports and intervene in crisis situations as necessary.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills and comply with regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents.
