About the position

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) is a world-renowned non-profit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty for over 22,500 children and adults in Central Harlem. The organization provides a comprehensive cradle-to-college support system, ensuring that young people and their families receive the academic, personal, and career support necessary to become self-sustaining and successful adults. HCZ's innovative approach has achieved unprecedented results, making it a thought leader in education, youth development, and anti-poverty initiatives. The Three-Year-Old Journey (TYOJ) program is a 12-week workshop series designed for parents and caregivers of children aged three years old, focusing on developmental milestones, discipline techniques, and activities that foster early literacy and math skills. As a Special Education Lead Teacher for the TYOJ, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing structured intervention programs that cater to the unique needs of each child, collaborating with parents and relevant stakeholders to create individualized learning plans. Your expertise will help ensure that children entering the program are well-prepared for their educational journey at HCZ Promise Academy Charter Schools.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a structured intervention program for the TYOJ participants.
  • Identify and assess a child's unique needs based on observation and analyzing standardized tests (Brigance).
  • Collaborate with parents and relevant persons to create and implement individualized learning plans.
  • Maintain and analyze each student's behavioral records.
  • Review, monitor, and meet timelines for IEPs, referrals, initial eligibilities, and re-evaluations.
  • Perform consultations with relevant parties to address a child's special educational, behavioral, and social needs.
  • Manage student intervention caseloads.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and IEP development; write goals and objectives for students entering the program.
  • Facilitate curriculum design for TYOJ participants.
  • Observe tutoring sessions and meet with staff and parents to provide feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in special early childhood development with at least two years of teaching experience.
  • New York State Certification Early Childhood or K-12.
  • Minimum of 1 year working with children with special needs.
  • Teacher's license.
  • Excellent communication and detail-oriented skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple time-sensitive tasks independently.
  • Experience working with parent and community groups.
  • Ability to communicate with sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Open to working with a diverse population of families, parents/caregivers, and children.
