About the position

The Special Education Moderate/Severe SDC Teacher will work under the direction of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and the site administrator to provide individualized education programs (IEPs) for identified special education students. The focus will be on functional, academic, social, and critical skill development, ensuring that all students are mainstreamed to the maximum extent possible. This role requires the teacher to create a supportive and engaging classroom environment that promotes positive behavior, attitudes, and social skills among students. The teacher will be responsible for delivering group, small group, and individual instruction tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. This includes providing age-appropriate instruction across various domains such as community, domestic skills, functional academics, recreation/leisure, and vocational training. The teacher will also collaborate with instructional aides to ensure that appropriate materials and directions are provided to support student growth. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the teacher will conduct assessments and parent interviews prior to IEP meetings to accurately gauge student performance levels and set tentative goals and objectives. Effective communication with parents regarding student accomplishments and concerns is essential. Participation in in-service programs, faculty meetings, and adherence to district-approved curriculum are also key components of this position. The teacher will attend to the physical and social needs of the children, ensuring a holistic approach to education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide an individual education program for each student based on the student's IEP.
  • Provide group, small group, and individual instruction to meet the student's identified needs.
  • Create an appropriate classroom environment that promotes positive student behavior, attitudes, and social skills.
  • Deliver age-appropriate instruction in community, domestic, functional academics, recreation/leisure, and vocational domains.
  • Provide appropriate materials and direction to the instructional aide to support student growth.
  • Test students and conduct parent interviews prior to IEP meetings to develop accurate levels of student performance and tentative goals and objectives.
  • Communicate accomplishments and concerns with parents.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service programs at the site, within the district, or the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Follow district-approved curriculum and attend to the physical and social needs of the children.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Education Specialist: Moderate/Severe Disabilities Credential or equivalent.
  • English Learner Authorization is required.
  • Ability to modify curriculum materials to meet individual student needs.
  • Effective communication skills with students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation and develop a positive classroom environment.
  • Experience in developing comprehensive educational programs that align with IEP goals and objectives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current professional letters of recommendation written within the last two years are encouraged but not required.
